It’s been too long

2015 was a difficult year for my writing. I got a lot done, don’t get me wrong, but my output fell to a trickle after my injury and pretty much stopped other than my thesis after September. I’m rededicating 2016 now, about 5 weeks into the year, to improving and finishing my writing output. I have 3 novel projects in the works, including my thesis, and I hope to write a lot more short stories and articles this year.

Some of my short fiction output will be posted here.

Writing is a journey.

So is another passion of mine, roller derby. In 2014, after spending a couple of years admiring the sport from afar, I chose to take the plunge into roller derby. In 2015 this choice took me through a torturous injury and recovery, and now I’m most of the way back to full health – not all the way, yet, but I’m MUCH better than I was.

One of the interesting things about this sport is how fresh it still is, 15 years after the revival began. While there are certainly 10, 11, 12 year veterans still skating, I read somewhere that the difference between bambi-legged fresh meat and seasoned veteran tends to be about 2-3 years.

With my personal experience, I would say this is very likely true. I definitely look at the sport with different eyes now than I did nearly a year and a half ago when I started.

So for those of you who have been reading me consistently, I’ll see you here, and on twincitiesgeek.com, and hopefully sooner than later in print again.

Protect our poor white boys from the evils of trigger warnings

Another angry woman

An evil stalks our white men, threatening them with seconds of mild awkwardness and the possibility they might have to think about others briefly. I am talking, of course, of trigger warnings. The usage of a short textual warning above content, equivalent to allergy or seizure warnings but relating to mental health, is new to these white men, just catching their attention.

It scares them. It scares them shitless. For many, it is hands down the biggest threat they are facing. And this cannot stand: this historically-cossetted group is finally encountering some adversity: imagine! They may have to think about other people’s feelings, something we have wrapped them in cotton wool to avoid. They may have to take thirty seconds of their time to type a short warning about what lies within an article… or even a book, fancy that! And worst of all–this is something we have tried for millennia to…

Best and Worst Power Rangers Costumes

Since I’ve been watching through Linkara’s “History of Power Rangers,” here are my favorite and least favorite team and individual (Sixth Ranger or Extra Hero) costumes. Keep in mind these are all my opinion.
Why am I writing this? Because I haven’t posted anything on my blog in weeks and this is as good a thing as any!

Favorite, Team: Majiranger/Mystic Force – the helmets are really nicely done and the costumes reinforce the season’s theme, having nice callbacks to the idea of a wizard’s robes as well as the traditional super sentai catsuit.
(honorable mention: Gokaiger/Super Megaforce, Kyoryuger/Dino Charge, Zyuranger/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers)

Favorite, Individual: DragonRanger Burai/Tommy Oliver/Green Ranger, Zyuranger/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers seasons 1 and 2 – The original Sixth Ranger and the best Sixth Ranger costume. The DragonRanger/Green Ranger costume takes the already excellent Zyuranger costume and turns it up to 11 with royal gold accents and some really well-made accessories like the Dragon Dagger to summon the mighty Dragon Caesar/Dragonzord, which is a one-mecha wrecking crew that is DaiZyuJin/Megazord’s equal in every way.
(Honorable mention: Kibaranger/Mighty Morphin White Ranger (Dairanger/MMPR2), GokaiSilver/Silver Super Mega Ranger (Gokaiger/SMF), Kyoryu Gold/Gold Dino Charge Ranger (Kyoryuger/DC))

Least Favorite, Team: Megaranger/Power Rangers in Space – It’s a little sad that one of the three best seasons of Power Rangers has in my opinion the worst team costume in the history of the show. This is just a bland costume in all respects – the helmet doesn’t say anything in particular (how generic is the helmet? So generic that they reused it at least three times in Power Rangers series that had nothing to do with PRiS). and the bodysuit is just solid color with a band across the chest. The team’s main weapons are also nothing to write home about.
(dishonorable mentions: Kakuranger/Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers, Goseiger/Megaforce, Boukenger/Operation Overdrive)

Least Favorite, Individual: Signalman/Blue Senturion – The Extra Hero costumes (unlike the Sixth Rangers, which tend to be pretty good) tend to be pretty hit or miss, but when you combine a bulky, robo-style Extra Hero costume with a goofy concept like “Enforcer of Traffic Laws,” the resultant costume is something that stepped out of my weirder nightmares.
(dishonorable mention: Ninjaman/Ninjor (MMAR/MMPR3), Bouken Silver/Mercury Ranger (Boukenger/PROO), Abarekiller/White Dino Thunder Ranger (Abaranger/PRDT))

“Big Pharma” & Privilege: Or Why I Wish Allies Would Stop Using This Phrase

Hugos and SJWs

Personally I am just beyond tired of the “good vs. evil” narrative embraced by the “anti-SJW” types who populate the internet (and what does it say about you when your conception of “good” is that which directly opposes social justice?).

What it comes down to for me is this: A bunch of guys went all Sideshow Bob (“Your guilty conscience may move you to vote Democratic, but deep down you long for a cold-hearted Republican to lower taxes, brutalize criminals, and rule you like a king”) And SFF fandom responded, “The devil you say!”

The truth is, there are no SJWs – at least, not as the “anti-SJW” types portray them. There’s just a bunch of fans who got really fed up with somebody trying to tell them what they should want to read.

Being a Jerk About the Hugos: Not as Effective a Strategy as You Might Think

Whatever

(Warning: Hugo neepery. Avoid if you don’t care.)

As most of you know, at last Saturday’s Hugo Awards ceremony, the voters, of which there were a record number, chose not to offer awards in six categories rather than to give the award to nominees who got on the ballot because of the Sad/Rabid Puppy slating campaign. In the categories in which awards were given, in nearly all cases the Puppy nominees in the category finished below “No Award.” The only category where a Puppy nominee prevailed was in Best Dramatic Presentation, in which one of their choices was Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s not a lot of credit they can take for that one.

Why did the Puppies fare so poorly? There has already been much speculation and analysis on the matter, and there will continue to be for some time. But in my estimation (and leaving out issues…

A retraction

I usually have given matters a bit of study before I give a position on them in print, so I seldom print retractions. Last night I asserted that Best Fan Writer should have been a No Award because of Laura Mixon’s role in exposing the role of Benjanun Sriduangkaew as one of sf fandom’s most vicious abusers. I am retracting this statement now. Exposing community abusers is important.

At the late hour of 12:30 or so in the morning, I lacked the resources immediately to pull apart and critique what was being written. I should have withheld printed judgment until I had said resources. Using the shield of internet anonymity to spread abuse and tell people they should commit suicide is reprehensible and I strongly believe that people who do so deserve to be exposed.

So: Fandom 14, Puppies 1 (sorta. Best Dramatic Presentation – Long Form looked pretty much the way it would have without the Puppies so calling that a Puppy victory is tenuous at best).
